Youth-led TB Awareness Lay Summary
Inuit have the most new cases of TB in relation to their population than all other populations in Canada. This study aimed to increase TB awareness among Inuit youth and their communities. The Taima TB Youth Education Initiative was focused on using information that we gained from a larger study that developed teaching tools for TB and extended them to Inuit youth. We then took these teaching tools after it had been adapted for youth and presented the package to youth in Clyde River and Pangnirtung. The program was also done in two other communities. 41 youth participated, with an average of 16 years in the four different communities. Community celebrations to highlight the learning that the youth did had 271 people attend. Health care workers felt that the adapted learning modules were acceptable and useful. Knowledge uptake was on average around 64 out of 100. Local partners said that they would use the program in the future.
